St. Anthony Monastery was established in the 4th century by Saint Anthony, who is considered the father of Christian monasticism. The monastery is home to several ancient churches and chapels, including the Church of St. Anthony and the Church of the Virgin Mary. The monastery also contains a library with rare and ancient manuscripts.

In 2001 Monk Silouan continued the stewardship of the Hermitage and its ecology until 2017.
